Qurban initiative organised by Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO), bringing relief and Eid celebrations to thousands of people facing economic hardship.
The annual Qurban project, conducted as part of Eid al-Adha commemorations, seeks to support disadvantaged families through the distribution of meat donated by individual and institutional contributors. This year’s exercise was implemented between May 27 and May 30, 2026, reaching communities in Kamuli, Buyende, Wakiso and Kampala districts.
According to TICO, the project was inspired by the Islamic tradition of sacrifice and sharing with those in need, with a focus on supporting widows, orphans, elderly persons and other vulnerable groups.
Speaking about the initiative, TICO Executive Director Damulila Faizal said the organisation aimed to ensure that vulnerable families could participate in the Eid celebrations with dignity.
“By serving 1,500 vulnerable households this Eid, TICO acted as a bridge of hope. We did not just distribute food; we helped families feel included in the celebrations during a period when many struggle to meet basic needs,” he said.
To ensure compliance with hygiene and Islamic slaughtering requirements, TICO centralised the slaughtering exercise in Kamuli District before packaging and distributing the meat through teams deployed to various beneficiary communities.
The organisation said the beneficiaries were selected from underserved rural and urban areas, including households headed by children, widows and families facing severe economic challenges.
Project Manager Nathan Kiyemba said the initiative was designed to maximise available resources and ensure the donations reached those most in need.
“Our focus was to honour the trust placed in us by donors and partners by ensuring effective implementation. The systems established this year enabled us to extend support to a large number of households, and we hope to reach even more communities in future,” he said.
TICO officials noted that for many beneficiaries, access to meat remains a rare luxury due to poverty and rising living costs. As a result, the Qurban donations provided an important source of nutrition for thousands of people, particularly children and elderly persons.
The organisation’s Public Relations Officer, Sheikh Akram Kimala , said the demand for assistance remained high in many communities, underscoring the need for continued humanitarian support.
“Operating a central slaughtering point in Kamuli allowed us to maintain the required standards before distribution to beneficiaries in Buyende, Wakiso and Kampala. We appreciate the support of our partners and members of the public who made this exercise possible,” he said.
Despite challenges such as heavy rainfall and logistical constraints, TICO said the project was successfully implemented, enabling families to celebrate Eid al-Adha with meals they might otherwise have been unable to afford.
Beneficiaries across the targeted districts were able to prepare special meals and mark the religious holiday alongside their communities, helping restore a sense of dignity and inclusion during the celebrations.
The organisation credited the success of the project to the support of donors, partners and volunteers who contributed financial, material and logistical resources.
TICO has pledged to continue expanding its humanitarian interventions and strengthening future Qurban campaigns to reach more vulnerable households across the country.
